Oktoberfest Sugar Mountain

Oktoberfest Sugar Mountain is the annual gathering of locals, vacationers and those that love the mountains at the Village of Sugar Mountain. It takes place in October, when the leaves are at their peak. Crafts, live German music, kids’ games and plenty of food and spirits abound at this fun weekend event. Shag at Sugar Mountain

Shag at Sugar Mountain is an annual Sugar Mountain NC event presented in late summer just before fall begins to set in with colder temperatures. Neighbors, friends and visitors join together to enjoy the best of summer at Sugar Mountain North Carolina and Banner Elk and enjoy the flowers and scenery along with live entertainment, delicious food, crafts and spirits. Sugarfest NC

Sugarfest takes place during the ski season at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, on the second weekend in December. This weekend event celebrates all things having to do with snow. Sugar Bear is on hand each year and welcomes visitors along with skiing and skating Olympic medalists. Ski specials abound during this time and everyone loves the live entertainment and other celebrations, like an ice sculpting and snowball eating contest, that are scheduled annually during this fun winter weekend in the Sugar Mountain winter wonderland.

Woolly Worm Festival

Woolly Worm is an annual weekend event that takes place during the third weekend of October in Banner Elk North Carolina. This yearly event has taken place for more than 30 years and encourages children and adults alike to come out and race woolly worms that seem to abound in the mountains during this time of year. Woolly Worms are peculiar looking caterpillars that have black and brown bands of fur on their bodies. During the festival, these cute critters are placed on vertical strings and a race takes place to see which worm makes it up its string the fastest. After several heats, a winner is declared and the winning worm predicts the forecast for the upcoming winter season. That's right folks—it's a fantastic time complete with food, crafts and lots of family fun! Come out and enjoy this weekend that brings thousands to the small resort town of Banner Elk NC each year. Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

The Highland Games Grandfather Mountain take place every July. This massive event brings together the Scottish clans from around not just the Southeast, but the rest of the world. During this fun, weekend-long event Scottish clans, enthusiasts and vacationers descend upon Linville at McCrae's Meadow. Grandfather Mountain NC and the surrounding peaks found in this region of the NC Blue Ridge Mountains have always been compared to the Scottish Highlands and many of the immigrants that settled the area were of Scottish descent. Every year this event brings fun, traditional Scottish games, Celtic music, food and all things that celebrate Gaelic culture. Plan to visit in July for the Highland Games Grandfather Mountain and stay in our Banner Elk Cabins.

Autumn at Oz Festival atop Beech Mountain NC

Every year during the first weekend in October the former Land of Oz amusement park and various characters and fans of the movie The Wizard of Oz gather for the Autumn at Oz Festival. Beech Mountain was once the home of the Land of Oz park, which was dedicated to all things having to do with the movie and came complete with a yellow brick road, Dorothy’s red slippers and décor from Munchkin Land that folks will remember seeing in the movie. Today, even though the park is closed, children of all ages that adore the movie come together to check out what’s left of the park and what’s new each year during the Autumn at Oz Festival.
